The EJOT solar fastener is not a hanger bolt!

EJOT Solar Fastening - The reliable solution for the installation of your photovoltaic unit onto steel trapezoidal profiles or sandwich panels.

The environmental consciousness of the population is increasing and the desire for clean energy is ever-present. In the last two years solar and photovoltaic installations have become very significant for the German economy. The demand for available modules and inverters for photovoltaic installations shows the limits of the existing capacities.

But it is not only the profit and amortisation period of the subsidised solar power, which needs special consideration when planning a PV unit.

Reliability, long working life and in particular permanent withstanding of external thermal influences and weathering are important. Only if these criteria are fulfilled, the objective of a profitable investment in a PV unit can be realised in the medium or long-term.

Oftentimes during the planning of a solar installation the smaller details are not sufficiently considered, the importance is simply underestimated. One of these details is the installation of the module stand onto the roof.

Sooner or later the chosen fastening system can become the weak link in the chain if the actual loads, such as the weight of the complete solar installation, snow and wind force cannot be absorbed with a certain safety margin. The requirements are high because we increasingly notice the changes of nature with strong snowfall, intense storms and strong winds.

In addition to the secure load bearing capacity such a fastening element guarantees the easy and lasting seal between roof penetration and fastener.

If this link between solar installation and roof is not chosen correctly, it can lead to surprising and expensive problems with the solar roof.

As a specialist for fastening elements EJOT Building Fasteners have developed the "EJOT Solar Fastening", for joining the mounting rack for solar units and the roof.

Under consideration of the arising dynamic and static loads the Solar Fastening is directly and securely fastened onto the substructure. The direct load transfer into the substructure is very important, in order to permanently and reliably absorb linear expansion due to temperature, permanent pulsating wind as well as snow loads.

Since the beginning of 2007 EJOT have offered the Solar Fastening as the first stainless steel fastening element building authorities approved by the DIBT (German Institute for Construction Z-14.4-532), which can fasten photovoltaic installations onto steel trapezoidal profiles and sandwich panel roofs in a quick, easy and reliable way.

The EJOT Solar Fastening is also suitable for mounting a PV unit onto fibrous cement corrugated sheet roofs.

Hanger bolts do not have a building authorities approval for this field of application, despite a striking resemblance with the EJOT Solar Fastening,

The advantages of approved products at a glance:

  • monitored, constant quality
  • serves as proof of usability for testing agencies and insurance companies
  • static characteristics enable proof of the load-carrying capacity without assumptions
  • no proof of the serviceability of the object is required for individual cases
  • saves planners a lot of detail work
  • easy and reliable installation
  • reliable seal of the roof penetration

For an existing roof the screws are simply exchanged with a Solar Fastening with the appropriate thread for the substructure.

The steel purlin construction underneath the roofing sheet needs to be only > 1,5 mm thick. There are no upper limits even for steel.

For wooden substructures EJOT offer the Solar Fastening with a special thread for wood according to DIN 571. For hanger bolts often anchor threads (also called expansion threads) are used. Due to their thread design, these screws are developed for the expansion of anchor systems and not for fastening timber.

The EJOT Solar Fastening is used for fastening of the roofing as well as the load transfer of the newly installed PV unit and the incurred wind and snow loads.

The clou: Through the easy replacement of the fastening elements the roofing is not usually penetrated any further due to subsequent assembly.

This way further potential for leakage is minimised and the risk of unforeseeable long-term consequences for owner and contractor is eliminated.

Further detail:

  • The thread length (measured from the thread point to the static fixed point) is perfectly attuned to your project. It is generated from the recommended installation depth + profile height + insulation thickness of the roofing
  • The realisation of the optimum installation depth for every joint is guaranteed by the specified screw length.
  • The controlled repeatability of the defined installation depth is an important prerequisite for the preparation of a project related initial sizing.
  • The assembler cannot change the specified insertion depth. Important performance features stay constant.

The metric thread of the EJOT Solar Fastening, which stays above the water-bearing level, is compatible with all common rail fastenings and offers the possibility to compensate differences in height in addition to the good rear ventilation.

For the use of the Solar Fastenings EJOT offers an initial sizing service free of charge to its customers. Depending on different parameters such as roof pitch, purlin spacing, location of the building etc., the customer receives the statically necessary number per m².

The questionnaire for calculation can be downloaded, free of charge, at www.ejot.de.
